brutovsky et al. show how optimization theory can be used to understand and fight cancer. for instance, if therapy is considered as a penalty function, it may actually help therapy-resistant cancer cells to evolve and thrive (by simplifying the fitness landscape), if it doesn't manage to wipe out the cancer per se.
