in this classic paper from 1981, wooters shows how statistical distance between two quantum states is equal to the angle in hilbert space between them. classically, the statistical distance between probability distributions is the angle between vectors composed of the square-roots of their component probabilities. so it seems as though, once again, the structure of quantum mechanics is related to something optimal in statistics.
